NO DANCE PAD
Play Stepmania without a dance pad - your real options
Vanilla Stepmania really wants a pad. Keyboard works for technical play but loses the body part. If what you actually want is "dance to charts without buying hardware," there is now a real path: Stepaholic, a webcam-based dance game that runs in your browser.
Keyboard works - but it is not dancing
Stepmania supports keyboard input out of the box. It is great for technical play, score-chasing, and apartment-friendly silent practice. It is not the same activity as dancing.
Webcam input is the missing middle option
Stepaholic uses your webcam to track full-body motion and grade your steps. Same "rhythm-game-but-with-your-body" feel as a pad, no plastic involved.
Browser-based, no install
Open a tab, allow your camera, dance. Nothing to download or configure. Works in Chrome, Edge, and Safari.
Songs included out of the box
20+ bundled charts (Fraxtil's Beast Beats). No simfile setup, no pack management - just pick a song.

Frequently asked questions
Can I really play Stepmania without a pad?
Yes - Stepmania has full keyboard support. Many high-skill players use keyboard. But it changes the activity: keyboard Stepmania is finger dexterity, not dancing. If you wanted the cardio / movement / "dance to music" experience, keyboard does not deliver it.
Are there cheaper pads worth buying?
Soft pads ($30-60) work, but most slip on hardwood, wear out within a few months, and are noticeably less responsive than hard pads. Hard pads ($150-400+) hold up but are loud, take up permanent floor space, and require a non-trivial buying decision. If you are unsure whether you will stick with rhythm dancing, that is a lot to commit upfront.
How is Stepaholic different from running Stepmania with a webcam mod?
Stepaholic is purpose-built for webcam input. The chart timing, hit-detection windows, and game feel are tuned around pose-detection latency rather than retrofitted onto a pad-first engine. Stepmania does not have a built-in webcam mode, and the third-party hacks that try to add one are fragile.
Will my Stepmania simfiles work in Stepaholic?
No. Stepaholic uses its own curated chart library. If you have a long-loved Stepmania simfile collection, keep using Stepmania for those - Stepaholic is a different game with its own songs.
What if I just want to dance casually for fitness?
That is exactly what Stepaholic is built for. The webcam-based input means you can play in front of a TV or laptop, get real cardio, and not need to spend money on hardware or floor space first. It is a friendlier on-ramp than buying a pad you might not stick with.
